Tutto iniziò con quello che fu ritenuto un tentativo di furto al Watergate Hotel e ne venne fuori uno scandalo politico, una leggenda per il giornalismo e due icone per i cronisti, Bob Woodward e Carl Bernstein. A quasi trentacinque anni di distanza, qualche mese fa la docente di giornalismo all’American University, Alicia C. Shepard, pubblica il libro Woodward and Bernstein: Life in the Shadow of Watergate, frutto di una ricerca durata un triennio e improntata a una rilettura dei fatti non sempre tenera verso la stampa dell’epoca e successiva:

Using a plethora of interviews with all the leading characters, as well as newly-unearthed archives, Shepard picks up where Woodward and Bernstein’s All the President’s Men leaves off, filling in the parts of the story that have been obscured by that title’s massive popularity-“many have misread their fascinating story as being the only story”-and providing welcome context through vivid cultural snapshots.

Già su una linea analoga si mosse Mark Feldstein del Journalism Oral History Project, che presentò tre anni fa una rivistazione del caso e, tra l’altro, scrisse:

So what really happened? In the end, perhaps truth lies somewhere between the self-congratulatory boosterism of journalists and the kiss-off of the academics.
